Assalamu Alaikkum.
With the Grace of Holy Allah, to fulfil the duties of "Indian Hajj Volunteer", I left Vandhavasi on 8.10.1975 at about 3.00 p.m. with Janab K. Abdul Wahab sahib, then M.L.A., of Ranipet constituency, by car and met Janab S.J. Sadiq Pasha, B.A., B.L., then Hon'ble Minister for Industries, Electricity and Wakfs, at about 6.00 p.m. in his residence and received his suggestions for serving our pilgrims As that day was a State Holiday we could not meet the Secretary of Tamil Nadu Hajj Committee Mr. M. Ahmed, I.A.S., as he was not available in his residence. I left by 10.00 p.m. on the same day by Madras Bombay Mail and reached Bombay V.T. on 10.10.1975 at 6.00 a.m. The registered coolies, attached to the Madras Haj Service Society, namely Allavudeen and Mohamed Kasim, received the Tamil Nadu Hajj pilgrims in the V.T. Station and arranged taxis.
When I reached the Tamil Nadu Baithul Hujjaj, (run by the Madras Hajj Service Society) situate in No.39/43 Masjid Street, Near Mandvi Post Office, Bombay-400 003. Telephone No. 330721, Gram : SAFAMARWA along with other Tamil Nadu Hajj pilgrims, we were received cordially by the staff and the receptionist. Mr. Amjad provided the accommodation in the B. Hujjaj. This building is a modern, well furnished four storeyed one, having lift facility and capacity to accommodate upto 200 pilgrims. The stay of Hajj pilgrims both inward and outward are free and the accompanying relative or friend of the pilgrim is charged Rs.20/- per head in total irrespective of the number of days of stay. The Society has in employment watchmen, lift operator, peons, receptionist cum clerk who has authority to receive the cash amounts of Hajj pilgrims in amanath (safe custody) on proper receipts till they demand
for payment towards foreign exchange. The secretary Janab Abdul Rahim Sahib makes a daily visit from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. to the Society and renders service to the pilgrims in getting their pilgrims pass from Hajj committee.
10.10.1975 to 16.10.1975 :
Visited Hajj committee, met Janab M.H. Siddique, Executive Officer/more than four times and discussed the Rubat matter in detail. Met Janab Ahmed Zakaria, chairman, Hajj Committee and along with him went round the various sections dealing with the pilgrim pass matter. On 11.10.1975 and 14.10.1975 I went to Harbour to assist the embarkation of Tamil Nadu Hajj pilgrims. About 85 pilgrims from Tamil Nadu left by 1-8 sailing Akbar and on 14.10.1975 about 20 pilgrims left by Ist sailing Mohammedi. On 16.10.1975 along with 25 pilgrims from Tamil Nadu, I boarded UV sailing Mozaffari ship by 5 p.m. Mr. Amin Ahmed, welfare officer of Tamil Nadu was rendering excellent service to our pilgrims in all aspects. For his age, he is very active, accommodative and very much communicative. His presence is felt in every section of the Hajj Committee. He attends to the embarkation of the pilgrims by every sailing. Many other members of the Service Society like Mr. Abdul Hameed and Syed Peeran also visit harbour and render service. The Mazdoor coolies attached to Service Society like M. Allaudeen of Nellikuppam, Meera Mohideen of Koothanalloor and Mohamed Kasim bearing cooly Nos. 53, 59 and 319 render valuable service regarding transportation of luggages both outward and inward journey from Bombay.
16.10.1975 to 25.10.1975 :
At 12.10 midnight on 16.10.1975 IIIrd sailing Mozaffari left Bombay Harbour. On 17.10.1975 from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. due to some minor engine trouble the ship did not move. Janab Dawood Ismail of Bombay was the Amirul Hajj of the ship. Alongwith 10 other Hajj volunteers, I assisted him in discharging his duties. Arranging daily prayer, religious instructions regarding the Hajj rituals and daily rounds visiting the deck and Is' class pilgrims at 10 a.m. alongwith captain, visiting kitchen and tasting the food, visiting hospital and in-patient wards - were attended by me. On 20.10.1975 soaps were distributed to the deck class pilgrims. On 21.10.1975 one Saheb Ali, son of Yakub Ali of Bhawanipur (West Bengal) aged 70 years died due to acute respiratory exhaustion. After zanaza prayer the body was lowered into the sea at 11 a.m. I assisted in the whole procedure and rituals, met the deceased relatives, signed the inquest report and wrote letters to Looqman Ali, the deceased's son, and posted them in Jeddah. We crossed Aden seaport between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. on 23.10.1975.
On 23.10.1975 at 7.30 a.m. one Kallukhan, son of Bahadur Khan of Rasoolpur, Uttar Pradesh died due to acute respiratory failure. By about 9.00 a.m. his body was lowered into the sea after zanaza prayer. On 24.10.1975 after Ist siren at 4.30 p.m. and IInd siren at 5.30 p.m. all the Hajj pilgrims wore IHRAM cloths, offered 2 rakayat prayer, took `Niyyath' - recited `Thalbia' and offered `Dua'. On 25.10.1975 reached Jeddeh Harbour at 1 p.m. Emigration officials visited the ship and completed their work by 4 p.m. From 5 p.m. Hajj Pilgrims were allowed to disembark, carrying the small luggages in their hands.
From the moment of getting down till the time the pilgrims reach Madinathul Hujjaj, the pilgrims have to undergo a very great strenuous ardeal, sapping their physical and mental energy. The agony is great as many of the pilgrims are undergoing maiden performance, as the old procedure is completely changed and the authorities of Saudi Government and personnel of Indian Embassy are very anxious to clear the dock, to enable another ship to reach the dock. To illustrate this point, the luggages are carried by trollies and heaped in one or two big halls - after most of the luggages have arrived, the pilgrims are asked to open their luggages for customs clearance. In the midst of nearly 5000 to 7000 luggages, it is a herculian task for anybody to locate all his luggages, which may get spread over in a very wide area and collect them to one spot for inspection. More often than not every pilgrim may not be able to trace his bedding, Zamzam tin or gunnybag. As the inspection starts, as soon as the trunk boxes or other goods are checked, loading the inspected luggages also commences immediately. The Saudi coolies, who are paid wages on per Hajj Pilgrim basis, in their anxiety to clear the hall earlier, carry the Zamzam tins, gunny bags etc., without inspection. Hence they are not available for inspection. To convince our pilgrims by saying that the missing goods will be available in Madinathul Hujjaj, as they would have gone by lorries - is next to impossibility. Particularly old, sick and weak pilgrims are at the mercy of other pilgrims or Hajj volunteers in getting the goods traced and inspected. After reaching Madinathul Hujjaj, to locate the goods and getting them collected under the cooly of that particular moallim to whom the pilgrim is allotted is also a problem. In the harbour and in the Madinathul Hujjaj Indian Embassy Asst. Hajj Officer Mr. M.O.A.Ansari and Asst. Mr. Habibullah Khan, assist the pilgrims and one or two doctors and compounders attached to the Indian Medical Mission attend to the sickly pilgrims and the very sickly pilgrim is carried in the ambulance (donated by Hajj Committee) to the Hujjaj Indian Dispensary.
This year, contrary to the past years, the choice of selecting moallim is not given to the Hajj pilgrim. The Saudi Government has selected 110 Moalliams for allocating all the Indian Hajj pilgrims and each moallim was allotted about 50 pilgrims. As the moallims were sure of their allotment, they did not evince interest in the welfare of the hajis like visiting Hujjaj, arranging the bus trip to Mecca, verifying the luggages etc. I am told by others that till last year moallim like Syed Abdul Rahaman Hashim Shilley were attending Hajj pilgrims on the arrival of every ship or plane. This year, my experience was that I did not see any moallim in Jeddah till my departure except one moallim Syed Ahmed Shiek Makki who visited Hujjaj thrice or four times. Hence the pilgrims were actually groping in darkness, till they reached Holy Mecca. Again the trouble started for a pilgrim when pilgrims allotted to three or four moalims are carried by the same bus with their luggages on the top. Moreoften than not the coolies get the goods down from the bus as if all the goods belong to the pilgrims allotted to one particular moallim. The pilgrim's passes are in the possession of the bus driver and they were not allowed get down to verify whether the goods are brought down by mistake. Ultimately when they reach their moallim's houses their goods may be missing. The moallims do not enquire the drivers, the names and addresses of other moallims to whom the bus driver has gone first. In the result when the pilgrim states that his goods are missing, the Hajj volunteer has to visit not less than 30 to 40 moallims, who are allotted for that particular ship pilgrims, for tracing their goods. The moallims are spread over an area of 5 to 6 square miles and they are available usually after 7 p.m. and very rarely during the day time. Adding insult to the injury, at times even the pilgrim passes of a pilgrim may be handedover to a moallim who has no allotment of that pilgrim and he may get a pilgrim without a pilgrim pass. The moallims do not evince any interest in either case. When we go in search of a pilgrim's pass they will say they do have a pilgrim without pass.
The suffering in most of the cases is borne by the pilgrim. Some are really lucky that after 10 or 20 days of strenuous search, their goods or pass are traced. Till our departure we were not able to trace the trunk boxes of Julaika Bibi alias Adun wife of Hameed Sulthan, Muthupet (cooli no 59) Thayarammal, wife of Badesa Sahib, Muthupet and P.A. Abdul Gaffoor, Son of Abdul Gani, Lalpet. It is still a mystery as to what has happened to their goods.
The only solution for all these problems is that the Saudi Government should allocate atleast 100 pilgrims to a particular moallim for a ship and insist that he or his agent should come to Madinathul Hujjaj and take care of the pilgrims allotted to him. They should be made responsible and accountable for any loss of goods or pilgrim pass. I earnestly request your goodself to take up this matter with the Central Government authorities in the interest of all the ensuing Hajj pilgrims.
